Akadama is a naturally occurring Japanese volcanic clay that’s been used for centuries in growing bonsai.
It has the seemingly contradictory properties of both being able to regulate moisture as well as being exceptionally loose textured and fast draining.
For that reason, it’s also used extensively in Japan to grow cacti and succulents which can be prone to rot when proper drainage isn't available.
The granules are hard enough to keep the substrate from collapsing and causing plant roots to get waterlogged and rot, but allow for penetration by the delicate root fibres which are chiefly responsible for water uptake.
1lt will be enough to fill four 7cm pots as seen in the picture with the Copiapoa.
